There has been some great information I have learned here, I only hope to be able to give back as much as I have learned. Anyways, here is my problem. I have changed all the filters and fluids but am having a problem with the right clutch. When I press the clutch in to have the dozer turn right, everything works fine but the pedal sticks.

I have to sometimes use my foot to un-stick it. If I didn't I would turn in circles. The left one works fine.

Has anyone ever heard of this and what might be the fix. Reply With Quote. Re: CAT D3B Problem Start with the needle bearings at the pivots on the upper end of the pedals and the needle bearings on the rockshaft where the bellcranks are below the pedals.

They get full of hardened grease and crud over the years that the relatively weak return springs under the seat on top of the bevel gear housing can't overcome. I run my D3 every couple of weeks because a mechanic told me the steering clutches can bind and refuse to release I will try your solutions this weekend. I am glad to hear that it sounds like a pedal problem and not a more seriously issue.

I tought I would have a more serious problem, but ran it today for about 4 hours with no problems. Thanks again. Another quick question, I was talking with my neighbor and he has a D6 70's model. He said there is a grease fitting on the front axle. I have a manual but it does not have a lubrication diagram.

I have look all over the machine and the only grease fittings I see are on the front for the blade. Do you know of any grease fittings other than the track tensioner on the or around the undercarriage or do you have a lubrication diagram? All times are GMT The time now is PM. If you search for vocational trucks elsewhere you will not get any results. An old or deteriorating thermostat, however, may not recognize when to close off the cold water and subsequently overcool the engine.

The biggest problem associated with running too cool is excessive carbon buildup around valve guides and behind piston rings.

Other problems include combustion contaminants in the oil and the presence of sulfuric acid, which can attack the rings and valve guides. This can cause excessive wear and shorten the lives of these parts by up to 80 percent.

To get the most out of your engine, change your thermostats annually as part of your routine maintenance schedule. You can also determine thermostat wear by monitoring the coolant temperature under load. Cat engines usually have two or four thermostats per engine. If one fails, change all of them. The advantages to a regular thermostat changeout is increased fuel efficiency, longer life between overhauls and increased engine performance.

JD C vs. From what I can find, the years they were made correspond to those of the JD C. Now, the C is something I'm familiar with.

Anyone around here familiar with both that can give some basics regarding what's similar and what is not between these two dozers? I mean, from the oustside they're the same basic size and whatnot. What I want to know about is what's on the inside - mainly what would I need to be worrying about if I wind up with the D3B I knew the previous owner who ran it in his construction business for years and he told me it worked well and it has worked well for me also.

Mine has a winch and arch and six way.

Actually it is pictured in the photos under "crawler woos splitter" I posted a while ago. Good luck JR. That's the sort of info I've been looking for. I find it surprising that net searches for the Cat seem to come up rather sparse on data. I'm still trying to find data on the driveline and steering systems used - and the fact that it has a torque converter vs. That never came up in any of the searches. Nor can I find if it has wet or dry steering clutches. You'd think with the popularity of the Cat brand name that there would be sites all over the net covering their various products.

Your comment about parts cost is scary. I think Deere is way high most of the time yet you mention that Cat is worse. Maybe I'll keep looking for a C and this would be a case of the 'devil you know' vs. Well, in my case, the C would be the 'devil I somewhat know' since I've not yet owned one. Very informative. I bookmaked that site before, but somehow managed to lose it. Of course, they didn't have a brochure for the D3B but I can infer quite a bit from the D3 and D3C ones based on what I saw sitting in front of me.

I might wind up with it in the end, but I'm not jumping at it.Looking for Caterpillar D3B Bulldozer parts?

Cat D3B with a blown motor.

Cylinder 1 threw a rod. So my question is this I think I bought this thing right even with it needing a motor. Machine has all new chains, pads, sprockets, and a few bottom rollers.

Lots off new hoses. And it's coming from a friend so I trust that clutches and trans are in good working order. Aug 2, Mowingman ArboristSite Guru.

I do not think there is any other option. However, I have not been around one of those machines since the late 80's. Back then, the D3B, was considered one of, if not, "the", worst dozers that Cat ever produced. They were nothing but a constant problem. There was also a little track loader that was just as bad.

I think you need to talk to a Cat mechanic, but I do not believe you are going to get an answer that makes you happy. Storm56 NOT blinded by brand You may want to ask this question on the heavy equipment forum.

I then shut off the machine and let it sit for 10 minutes and it works fine for about an hour then the same thing. What is the first thing I should look for? It seems like a pluged filter but I can't find it. Or it may be a valve. Any help will be appreciated. Pat Patterson. I have a D3 - 79U that acts the same way. It will work for an hour or so and then stop moving. Let it set for a few minutes and it will work again. Fluid levels are fine, linkage all appear good but she quits.

I am looking for the answer to what is causing this. Is there a filter within the transmission??

If so where is it located? Could it be a bypass valve somewhere on the tranny. Thanks for any info.

R Wright. I have discovered that there is a metal screen filter on the D3. If you remove the floor board and looking back to front it is top right rear. I spoke with a Cat mechanic about the problem I am having and he told me that even if you clean the screen it still seems to not let enough oil through it. He thinks that replacing the screen with a new one will cure the problem. The next step would be to pressure test the hyd system and check the pump.

But it seems to me a positive displacement gear pump would either work or not work. Charles Strahan. On my D3B,there are two transmission filters.

One on top left rear cartridge filter and a screen accessible through a plate on the skid plate forward of the bevel gear housing. Will Whelan. Lonnie you never stated if machine moved again, the splines on the transmission pump drive do fail and if this is the case you will have to replace the gearset in the pump and also the drive gear in the transmission remove plug on oil filter housing and roll motor over. And you other guys replace the filter on the top and clean the suction screen one of you mentioned on the bottom of transmission do not drop and break the magnets in the suction screen.

Did anyone find out what their problem was. I have a D3B 23Y that is doing the same thing. Dave Braun. I also have a '78 D3 79U with the exact same problem.
